One of Coudersport Class of 1964, Joan Simons Wilks, sent me a copy of her kindergarten graduation which would have been in 1952. That photo with names is found on the Coudersport Elementary School page of this site. More information was sent about this private kindergarten.
Coudersport Private Kindergarten
Information from the Potter County Historical Society
Twila Dix had a private kindergarten at 412 N. East St., her obit says she retired from teaching 2nd grade in Coudersport in 1934. She moved to Portville in 1965. I am not sure if she actually retired or if, because she had a husband, she wasn’t allowed to work due to the depression. We don’t actually have information on the kindergarten itself as we are quite sure it was privately run by her for income.

I remember Twila closing the kindergarten shortly after I graduated…. My sister Gloria was not able to attend due to the closing and she is only 16 months younger than me. Twila’s husband was a taxidermist and he worked at this while Twila was teaching.
Information from Tim Heimel
The kindergarten was just up the street on the corner of North East and 5th about a block from where my mother still lives. I recall that the Simons family lived next door, and Everitt Dix had a taxidermy shop in the rear. Twila was a sweet, short lady, Everett was kind of a curmudgeon as I recall. There was a large 2-story house in front that served as rental property – my mother’s cousin Florence Stevens lived upstairs and several families lived downstairs. I was probably the last of my siblings to attend.
